[IT] Qui si puo' trovare la traduzione in italiano del mio articolo sulle Girl Geek Dinners (qui in inglese, qui l'originale in croato) , uscito in Croazia nella rivista Plan B, numero 16, a gennaio 2009.

"Sara' certamente capitato a chiunque di sentirsi, almeno una volta, in minoranza in una situazione dove teoricamente dovrebbe essere circondato di anime gemelle. Cosi' anche Sarah Blow all'incontro Geek Dinner, dove i ragazzi trattavano le poche donne come se tutte lavorassero nel marketing - e nessuno aveva capito che lei era una ingegnere di software. Lei ha deciso di non perdere tempo e ha organizzato un evento simile, Girl Geek Dinners, volendo dare la possibilita' ai partecipanti di scambiare (almeno in quella occasione) i ruoli della maggioranza e minoranza. Quindi alle cene delle ragazze geek possono partecipare anche i geek maschili, ma solo se sono invitati da una delle ragazze. E ognuna puo' invitarne uno solo. Il moto e' “definitely does compute”, che suona sia come “decisamente usa i computer”, sia come “puoi contarci che penso con la mia testa”. [EN] Here you can find the English version of my article about Girl Geek Dinners (and here's the Italian one, and here the original one, in Croatian), published in Croatia in the Plan B magazine, number 16, January of 2009.

"Everyone has probably felt as a minority, at least once, in an occasion where he or she should have theoretically been surrounded by kindred spirits. Sarah Blow went to a geek dinner where the men were treating the women, who weren't very numerous, as if they all worked in advertising – and nobody even noticed that she is a software engineer. So she decided not to waste any time, and organized a similar event – a girl geek dinner – wishing to give the participants an opportunity, at least on that occasion, to switch the roles of majority and minority. Therefore it is possible for the male geeks to participate in the geek girl dinners, but only if invited by a girl. And each one can invite only one of them. The motto is “definitely does compute”, which does mean that she uses computers but also sounds as “you can be sure that I think with my own head”." [HR] Ovdje je tekst mog clanka o Girl Geek Dinners (a ovdje prijevodi na talijanski i engleski), objavljan u Hrvatskoj u Planu B broj 16, u sijecnju 2009.

Svatko se zacijelo barem jednom osjećao kao manjina u prilici u kojoj bi teoretski trebao biti okruzen srodnim dusama. Tako se Sarah Blow našla na geek dinner susretu na kojem su muskarci one malobrojne prisutne zene tretirali kao da sve one rade u marketingu - i nitko na kraju nije shvatio da je ona softverski inzenjer. Stoga je odlucila ne gubiti vrijeme te je organizirala slicno zbivanje, girl geek dinner, zeleći sudionicima omoguciti da (barem tom prigodom) zamijene ulogu vecine i manjine. Dakle na vecerama geek-djevojaka mogu se prisustvovati prisustvovati i muski geekovi, ali samo ako ih pozove koja djevojka. A svaka moze pozvati najviše jednog.  Moto je "definitely does compute", sto znaci "definitivno koristi racunala" ali zvuci i kao "mozeš biti sigurna da razmišljam svojom glavom"." [IT] E' uscito in Croazia, nel numero 18 [planb.com.hr, borja.org] della rivista Plan B [site], il 15 di marzo, il mio articolo sui traduttori non-professionisti in internet, con particolare accento alla traduzione delle serie TV. Come sottotitolo e' stato aggiunto, dalla redazione: “In pochi pensano alla traduzione da parte degli utenti delle serie e dei film come di qualcosa che connette diverse culture, ma in alcuni casi e' proprio cosi'. [EN] The issue 18 [planb.com.hr, borja.org] of the magazine Plan B, of the 15^th of March, published in Croatia, contains my article about amateur translation on the Internet, with a particular accent on the translation of the TV series. As the subtitle it was added, by the redaction: “Few think of translation by users of series and films as something that connects different cultures, but in some cases it is exactly like that. [IT] Leo Espinosa, uno dei miei artisti preferiti in assoluto, ha segnalato sul suo blog la storia della fantastica animazione (nominazione Oscar 2008, vedere imdb, Wikipedia, sito) nata dalla audio intervista per la quale dobbiamo ringraziare un quattordicenne fan dei Beatles che si e' infilato nella stanza di John Lennon nel 1969 riuscendo a convincerli di fare una chiacchierata sul tema di pace. Le parole sono piene di idee e immagini, ma questo si nota ancora di piu' con l'animazione che e' la perfetta combinazione di visione, sogno, infografica, poesia, e quant'altro. Il titolo e' "I Met the Walrus", e gli autori Josh Raskin, James Braithwaite (www.thebathwater.com), Alex Kurina (portfolio), ecc. e Jerry Levitan (l'ex quatordicenne, imdb, Wikipedia) appare come produttore.

Adesso andate a vedere il video [Youtube].

[EN] Leo Espinosa, one of my absolutely favourite artists, has posted on his blog about the story of a fantastic animation (2008 Oscar nominee, imdb, Wikipedia, website) born out of an audio interview for which we must thank a fourteen year old Beatles fan who snuck into John Lennon's room in 1969 convincing him to chat a bit about peace. The words were full of ideas and images, but this is noted even better with the animation which is a perfect combination of vision, dream, infographics, poetry and what not. The title is "I Met the Walrus", the authors are Josh Raskin, James Braithwaite (www.thebathwater.com), Alex Kurina (portfolio), etc. and Jerry Levitan (the ex fourteen year old, imdb, Wikipedia) appears as producer.

Now go see the video.

And then listen to the "I Am the Walrus" by The Beatles (Youtube, Wikipedia) for the rest of the day. It'll make all the difference.

Rijeci su pune ideja i slika, ali to se primjecuje jos vise uz animaciju koja je savrseni spoj vizije, sna, infografike, poezije i cega sve ne. [IT] Sto leggendo, online, un libro che avevo avvistato a Booksa ma poi mi sono distratta e non l'ho preso. E' "Fiction writer's workshop" di Josip Novakovich. Volevo condividere con voi quel passaggio, dal suo dialogo con un storyteller, Nenad. Nel capitolo sul dove trovare materiale per scrivere prosa, parla anche del infanzia, quindi ho pensato di accompagnare questo post con le foto delle copertine di alcuni libri che ho letto da piccola, presi dal mio scaffale alla casa dei genitori a Spalato (alcuni che sono importanti mancano, perche' li ho persi ho portati con me a Milano). E intanto sto facendo anche fare esercizi di scrittura dal libro di Novakovich. (Seguite il collegamento "Continua" per piu' copertine.)

[EN] I am reading, online, the book that I had seen in Booksa, but then I got distracted and didn't buy it. It's "Fiction writer's workshop" by Josip Novakovich. I wanted to share that passage with you, his dialogue with a storyteller, Nenad. In the chapter on where to find materials to write prose from, he mentions childhood, so I thought I'd accompany this post with pictures of covers of some of the books I read when I was younger, from the shelf in my parents' house in Split (some important ones are missing, because they are lost or I took them to Milan with me). And in the meantime I am also doing writing exercises from Novakovich's book. (Click "Continua" per le altre copertine.)

[HR] Citam, na internetu, ovu knjigu koju sam vidjela u Booksi, ali onda mi je nesto odvuklo paznju pa je nisam kupila. To je "Fiction writer's workshop" iltiga radionica pisanja fikcije, Josipa Novakovic(h)a. Htjela sam s vama podjeliti gore navedeni dio (oprostite na prijevod s engleskog koji vjerojatno ne lici na izvornu hrvatsku verziju), gdje autor prica sa Nenadom, storytellerom. U tom poglavlju gdje govori o pronalazenju materijala za pisanje proze spominje i djetinjstvo, pa mi je palo na pamet da popratim ovaj post slikama naslovnica nekih od knjiga koje sam procitala "kad sam bila mala", ravno za polica u stanu mojih roditelja (neke nedostaju jer sam ih ili pogubila ili odnijela sa sobom u Milano). [IT] Che strano periodo qui, in Italia. Almeno sono andata a vedere, stasera (17.2.2009.), a Milano, la prima proiezione della rassegna “Dispersi doc, incredibile ma vero”. Gli organizzatori (associazione La Scheggia, webzine Hideout, ::Italian Subs Addicted::) lo descrivono cosi': “I documentari sono noiosi e soporiferi? Dimenticate Quark e i leoni dei parchi africani e scoprite 4 documentari che svelano il lato bizzarro e curioso della realtà. Quattro immersioni in mondi assurdi, improbabili e deliranti, ma assolutamente veri. Dal post-comunismo dell’Est Europa alla fede incrollabile di bambini prodigio americani, dalle sfide all’ultimo riff di chitarra al record del mondo di videogame degli anni Ottanta. [IT] Come forse sapete gia', Cox18, un posto/progetto che ha contribuito in modi interessanti alla vita culturale milanese (con anche libreria Calusca, archivio Primo Moroni, e cosi' via), e' stato sgomberato ([IT], [EN], ecc.). Si spera ancora che la situazione possa migliorare, e intanto si svolgono diverse attivita', come le proteste, una petizione ed eventi. Domenica, 01 febbraio 2009 c'e' stato un mercatino biologico e delle autoproduzioni, nella via, per ricordare il potenziale creativo del luogo, un po' ridotto numericamente dalla terza nevicata di quest'anno. Piu' foto oltre il "Continua".
[EN] As you may already know, Cox18, a place/project which has contributed in interesting ways to the culture of Milan (including the Calusca bookshop, the Primo Moroni archive, and so on), has been evicted ([IT], [EN], etc.). One can still hope that the situation may improbe, but in the meantime there are different activities, like protests, a petition and events. Sunday, on the 1^st of February, 2009, there has been a bio-DIY market in the street to remind of the creative potential of the place, numerically a bit riduced for the third snow of the year. [HR] Kao sto mozda vec znate, Cox18, mjesto koje je doprinijelo na zanimljive nacine kulturnom zivotu Milana (ukljucujuci i knjizaru Calusca, arhiv Primo Moroni, i tako dalje), je delozirano ([IT], [EN], itd.). Mozemo se nadati jos uvijek da ce se situacija popraviti, i u medjuvremenu se zbivaju razne aktivnosti, kao prosvjedi, peticija i dogadjanja. Nedjelju, 01. veljace 2009. je organizirana bio-DIY trznica (u ulici kao podsjetnik na kreativni potencijal tog mjesta, brojcano malo slabiji radi treceg snijega ove godine. [IT] Bilingui ragionano diversamente dei monolingui? A vedere il documentario “Found in Translation”, uno potrebbe venire a sapere di qualche teoria che suggerisce sia cosi', e sentire alcune storie di alcuni che hanno avuto delle esperienze personali sul tema. L'imparare delle lingue ci influenza ad un livello molto profondo (forse neurologico, addirittura). Il video e' un lavoro interessante, di Marina Catucci e Daniele Salvini, che mi hanno gia' ispirato tantissimo col loro lavoro “Stranieri (si diventa)”, il titolo del quale ho parafrasato nella conclusione del articolo “La pubblicita' e' una cosa seria”. Adesso stanno avviando un'iniziativa interessante – l'associazione culturale Filmlif, tra Milano e New York. E' un progetto di produzione video, che vede l'indipendenza produttiva coma scelta concettuale, e crede nella collaborazione piu' che nella competizione. Il video “Found in Translation” e altri si trova in rete, ma in Italiano, ci sono anche i sottotitoli in inglese - se non appaiono clickate sul "cc". Per le produzioni passate, potete visitare questa pagina, e per quelle in produzione, questa. A me incuriosisce specialmente questo video che stanno preparando sulle donne migranti. [EN] Do bilingual people reason differently then the monolinguals? After watching the documentary “Found in Translation”, one might learn of a few theories that suggest that is the case, and hear some stories of people who have had personal experience on the subject. Learning languages influences us on a very profound level (maybe even neurologically). The video is interesting, and is by Marina Catucci and Daniele Salvini, who have already inspired me much with their work “Stranieri (si diventa)” [Foreigners (is something you become)], the title of which I have paraphrased in the conclusion of my article “Advertising is a serious thing”. Now they are starting an interesting initiative – the Cultural Association Filmlif, between Milan and New York. It is video production project, which considers the independence of the production a conceptual choice, and believes in collaboration more then in competition. The “Found in Translation” video, as well as others, can be found online, but in Italian, with subtitles in English - if they don't appear click on "cc". [HR] Razmisljaju li dvojezicni ljudi drugacije od jednojezicnih? Nakon gledanja dokumentarca “Found in Translation”, mozemo doznati o nekoliko teorija koje tvrde da je tako, i cuti price ljudi koji su imali osobna iskustva na tu temu. Ucenje jezika nas mijenja na vrlo dubokoj razini (mozda cak i neuroloski). Video je zanimljiv, autori su Marina Catucci i Daniele Salvini, koji su me vec vrlo inspirirali prijasnjim radom “Stranieri (si diventa)” [Strancem (se postaje)], ciji naslov sam parafrazirala u zakljucku mog clanka "Oglasavanje je ozbiljna stvar". Sad pokrecu zanimljivu inicijativu – kulturnu udrugu Filmlif, izmedju Milana i New Yorka. To je projekt na temu produkcije video, koji smatra da je nezavisnost produkcije konceptualni izbor, i vjeruje u suradnju vise nego u konkurenciju. Per quanto riguarda il resto del numero, l'editoriale (della redattrice Ana Penovic) spiega che il contesto e' ancora segnato dalla crisi (economica), ma racconta che da quelle parti la gente ha un atteggiamento un po' stile “noi abbiamo gia' dato, adesso ci concediamo quello che vogliamo”, perche' qualche decennio fa quel paese, qualsiasi paese era al epoca, ha gia' vissuto le file e la austerita' e quant'altro. Quindi il numero e' dedicato a quelli che cercano di vivere, creativamente, al interno delle proprie possibilita', quindi si parla del mangiar sano, dei giochi da tavolo, artisti che decidono le proprie priorita', del fumetto in Croazia, e, appunto - delle Girl Geek Dinners, che sarebbe il mio articolo (3 pagine)! [EN] . Another article written by me is out, again in Croatia, for the Plan B magazine. The number is 16 (official pages, borja.org), of January 2009. I've written about the Girl Geek Dinners (world, Italy, Milan), and you can read a brief summary and see the page scans by clicking “Continua”. The text and the translation (it and en) will come later on. Regarding the rest of this number, the editorial (by the editor Ana Penovic) explains that the context is still marked by the crisis (economical), but narrates how the people over there has this attitude a bit like “been there, done that, now we can indulge ourselves in what we want”, because some decades back the country, whichever country it was at the time, had already lived the waiting in lines and the austerity and what have you. Thus the number is dedicated to those who try to live, creatively, inside their possibilities, so there's talk of healthy eating, board games, artist who decide on their own priorities, comics in Croatia, and – clearly – Girl Geek Dinners, which would be my (3 page) article. [IT]  Stamattina mi e' giunta la notizia che del Conchetta (Cox18) sotto sgombero. Spero che si risolvera' tutto in qualche modo... E' un luogo storico di Milano che e' l'intreccio di tanti progetti e percorsi, compresa una libreria, centro documentazione (Archivio Primo Moroni), ecc. Ci sarebbero tanti temi da affrontare, ma e' troppo difficile, sono concetti contraddittori che mi sfuggono ancora. Allora prendo dallo scaffale il libro di John N. Martin e Primo Moroni, a cura di Matteo Schianchi, "La luna sotto casa, Milano tra rivolta esistenziale e movimenti politici", Milano, Shake Edizioni, 2007. Oggi non ho tempo per aggiungere le citazioni e riflessioni, e poi sarebbe da fare con calma e attenzione, magari un giorno. Dopo “Continua” c'e' la copertina del libro scansionata e una mappa del punk a Milano dal 1982 al 1989. Il puntino numero 11 e' Conchetta.

[EN] This morning I heard the news of the ongoing eviction of the social center Conchetta (Cox18). I hope it can all be resolved some way... It is a place, in Milan, of historical importance, a node that links many projects and “percorsi” (routes, journeys), including a bookshop, a documentation center (Archivio Primo Moroni), etc. There would be many topics to cope with, but it's too difficult, the concepts are contradictory and still escape me. So I go to my bookshelf and take the book by John N. Martin and Primo Moroni, edited by Matteo Schianchi, “The moon on the doorstep (?), Milan between existential revolt and the political movements” (“La luna sotto casa, Milano tra rivolta esistenziale e movimenti politici"), Milano, Shake Edizioni, 2007. I have no time today to add citations and thoughts on it, and it's also something that would require care and attention, maybe some other day. Beyond “Continua” you can see the scanned book cover and a map of punk in Milan from 1982. to 1989. The dot number 11 is Conchetta.

To je jedno povijesno mjesto u Milanu, gdje su se isprepleli razni projekti i "percorsi" (putovi, staze), ukljucujuci i knjizaru i centar za dokumentaciju (Archivio Primo Moroni), itd. Bilo bi mnogo tema s kojima se sad suociti, ali to je pretesko, koncepti su kontradiktorni i izmicu mi. Tako da cu radije procitati knjigu, "Mjesec ispred kuce, Milano izmedju egzistencijalne pobune i politickih pokreta", autori Johna N. Martin i Primo Moroni, urednik Matteo Schianchi, (“La luna sotto casa, Milano tra rivolta esistenziale e movimenti politici"), Milano, Shake Edizioni, 2007. Danas ne stignem staviti citate i zabiljeske, a i nije nesto sto se uradi tek tako, zahtjeva paznju, mozda neki drugi put. [IT] Le riviste cartacee sono ancora per me una cosa molto importante, anche con tutto quello che si trova in rete, o forse a maggior ragione per quello. Per me sono delle mappe di immaginari sempre in evoluzione ma piu' tangibili dei blog. Una buona rivista ti dice tante cose, anche solo a sfogliarla, visivamente e per il montaggio di contenuti. Si, e' una questione di prospettive.Ed era proprio il cambio di prospettiva il tema del numero 14 (sul sito ufficiale, su borja.org) di rivista croata Plan B, uscito nel novembre 2008, e nel quale e' stato pubblicato il mio articolo “La pubblicita' e' una cosa seria” (scansioni pagine qui, il testo in croato e le traduzioni in italiano e inglese qua). Per sapere di piu' del numero stesso, vedere un po' di altre pagine ancora, e leggere una mia riflessione sull'escapismo e la musica, ispirata da un testo di Tonci Kozul, seguite il collegamento  “Continua”.
[EN] Magazines made of paper are still a fundamental thing for me, even with all that's availabile online, or maybe because of that. Because for me they are like maps of collective symbolic image inventories (“immaginario”), in constant evolution but more tangible then blogs. A good magazine tells you a lot even if we just leaf through it, visually and though the montage of contents. [HR] Papirnati casopisi su za mene jos uvijek vrlo vazna stvar, cak i svemu tome sto se moze naci na internetu, ili mozda bas zbog toga. Smatram ih mapama imaginarija, u stalnom razvoju, ali konkretniji od blogova. Dobar casopis ti komunicira mnogo toga i ako ga samo prolistamo, vizualno i montazom sadrzaja. Da, stvar je u perspektivama.I upravo je promjena perspektive tema 14. broja (na sluzbenoj stranici, na borja.org) hrvatskog casopisa Plan B, koji je izasao u studenom 2008., i u kojem je objavljen moj clanak "Oglasavanje je ozbiljna stvar" (ovdje vidite skanirane stranice, ovdje tekst na hrvatskom i prijevodi na talijanski i engleski). [IT]  Ecco il mio articolo intitolato “La pubblicita' e' una cosa seria” uscito in Croazia sulla rivista Plan B in novembre del 2008. Il titolo e' dal libro omonimo di Michele Rizzi, quale cito nel testo. Il tema del articolo e' la campagna “Romania, piacere di conoscerti/Hola, soy Rumano”, avviata in Italia e in Spagna dal Governo romeno a settembre 2008 per migliorare la reputazione dei propri cittadini che abitano in questi paesi.  Il documentario a cui faccio riferimento e' "Stranieri (si diventa) di Marina Catucci e Daniele Salvini (dell'associazione Filmlif, ne parlero' prossimamente sul blog). E' possibile scaricare il testo dell'articolo, in croato, e le traduzioni in italiano e in inglese (segnalate ogni errore, suggerite miglioramenti, ho ancora tanto da imparare per quanto riguarda la traduzione). [EN] Here is my article entitled “Advertising is a serious thing” that has been published in Croatia in the magazine Plan B, November of 2008. The title comes from a Michele Rizzi book of the same name, which I cite in the text. The article theme is the campaign “Romania, piacere di conoscerti/Hola, soy Rumano”, started in September 2008 in Italy and Spain, by the Romanian Government, to improve its citizens reputation in these countries. The documentary I refer to is called "Stranieri (si diventa)", by Marina Catucci and Daniele Salvini (from the association Filmlif, which I shall write more about later, on this blog). It is possible to download the text of my article, in Croatian, and the translations in Italian and in English (do let me know if you note any errors or have a suggestion to make, I've yet much to learn when it comes to translating). Invece e' una costruzione enorme che pare la stazione Termini in mezzo al deserto e in assetto da guerra. [...]" Le parole sono di Zerocalcare (Ink4Riot). Io e' da giorni che voglio scrivere qualcosa su Gaza ma non so cosa. Non so come. Come dire che la situazione mi inorridisce. Oggi ho trovato questo fumetto, dal quale e' tratta anche la citazione che apre questo paragrafo (qui), non so quanto sia recente, ma fa riflettere. Per leggere il resto del testo e delle traduzioni, e vedere il fumetto, segui il collegamento "Continua."

[IT] Le grandi distribuzioni come Re Magi – e' quanto suggerisce questo stencil che ho trovato per le strade di Spalato mentre schivavo i petardi in giro per il centro storico al passaggio tra il '08 e il '09, e un altro graffito che ci ricorda della privatizzazione dei cantieri navali, intorno ai quali la Unione Europea sta esercitando pesanti pressioni. [EN] The big distributions like the Three Wise Men – this is a scenario suggested by a stencil which I've found on the streets of Split while I was running away from the firecrackers as the '08 turned into the '09, and another graffiti which reminds us of the shipyard privatization, around which the European Union has been building a lot of pressure.
